Answers to the most common questions about cost, durability, installation and care.
A solid surface worktop is a man-made material made from natural minerals and acrylic resins. Brands like Corian®, HI-MACS®, Hanex and Staron® are non-porous, hygienic and can be seamlessly joined for a smooth, modern finish.
Costs depend on material brand, colour, thickness, edge profile and how complex the layout is. As a guide, many solid surface worktops fall around £350-£600 per m² supplied and installed. The most accurate quotes come from templating, because it accounts for walls, cut-outs and joints.
They're heat resistant, but not heat proof. Use trivets or heat pads for hot pans and oven trays. If a mark does happen, solid surface can usually be repaired and refinished - a big advantage compared with many other materials.
Every worktop can scratch with everyday use, but solid surface is repairable. Light scratches can often be buffed out, and deeper scratches can typically be sanded and refinished to restore the surface.
Yes. Solid surface is non-porous, so it resists staining from everyday spills like coffee, tea, wine and food. Wipe spills promptly and clean with mild soap and water.
Yes - integrated and undermount sinks are one of the biggest reasons people choose solid surface. The sink can be seamlessly joined to the worktop, which helps reduce grime traps and makes cleaning easier.
It comes down to preference. Solid surface is ideal for seamless joins, integrated sinks and repairability. Quartz often has a more stone-like look and can be slightly more heat tolerant. If you want a seamless, custom finish you can maintain over time, solid surface is a strong choice.
For day-to-day cleaning, use a soft cloth with warm water and mild detergent. Use chopping boards for food prep and heat protection for hot pans. Avoid harsh chemicals and wire pads.
With normal care, solid surface worktops can last 20+ years. Because the surface can be refinished, it's a material that can stay looking great for the long term in both domestic kitchens and commercial spaces.
Most projects follow a straightforward path: choose your material and colour, book templating for accurate measurements, then fabrication and professional installation.
